College Degree. Does It Worth It ?
Nowadays, many people consider a college degree as entry to a successful life, job promotions, and easy and comfortable life. People also have many prejudices that people without a degree are not as bright as people with a degree. I met many people who have no degree and have become top specialists in their field. Why do I write the article? I am writing it to help you make a decision. Maybe you are in the same way as I was and perhaps you have to make a decision which I had to make eight years ago.
Secondary school
I came to secondary school as a top sportsman. I played football(soccer), tennis, table tennis, volleyball. I also become a great fireman. Despite all my sports activities, I was a great student. I was between 2 intelligent guys in a school. I worked in companies. I wanted some extra money because I love money. I am like Floyd Mayweather Jr. But back to school. When I had to decide which secondary school I went to, I had no idea what I wanted to do, and only one type of school was the option. Therefore, I chose a school that provides a general system, and that school provides the best opportunity to get to the best college in the state. This school is called gymnasium and to this school can be accepted only children with the best diameter of marks from primary school. I found out that computers, maths, and programming are the only options for my following study fields during four years. After four beautiful years and so physically demanding years, I had to choose the college, and I will never regret my decision.
Bachelor degree
When I came as king of the world to the bachelor’s degree, I thought the world was mine. I enjoy my new friends, campus and learning new things. During my three years in the degree, I had to take part and pass around 50 subjects. It is crazy numbers, but I did it. I learnt lots of new things, and topics like the economy, different kinds of maths, Java, C++, Pascal, Assembler gave me a perspective on the future. But back to 50 subjects. I watched a video of Steve Jobs and how he was in college, and he loved only one issue, and he spent most of his time preparing for it. Thanks to that, we have different kinds of fonts in macintosh, and because windows copied the idea from macintosh, windows users have different types of fonts. I say this story because, from the 50 subjects and exams which I had to pass, I did not like any of them. Crazy that I say it, but It is true.
Master degree
After I graduated from college with a bachelor degree, I decided to continue to a master degree. Do you ask why I continued even if I did not like any of the 50 subjects in my bachelor degree? Good question. I wanted to give another shot to college. Some of my friends did not continue, but I will tell you about that later. During the master degree, it finally came. I loved three subjects, but it was the most complicated subject during my master degree. Database, discrete modelling and data structures have been the most enjoyed complete subjects during my college life. Master degree studies in 2 years, but I finally found something that I liked. During my master degree, I worked as a .Net developer and Golang developer, but I did not know if I would like to do this in my entire life. Therefore I made a decision. I decided to continue to postgraduate degree and see if I can do .Net and Golang developer other years.
Postgraduate degree
A postgraduate degree was an utterly different study type. I had massive respect for any teachers who taught my past subjects, but I called many of them by their first name during the postgraduate degree. Before my postgraduate degree, I called my future supervisor professor, and during my postgraduate study, I called him Michal. Yeah, and the following situation was for many teachers. But back to study. I had to teach students, create exams, prepare materials and help my supervisor — no lousy job. Students in the college are polity and ready to learn a lot. I love writing papers visiting countries, and speaking at conferences during my study. The COVID time played against me, and I had the opportunity to talk in a few meetings. The most important thing for me was finding out I love to cloud. During three years in my postgraduate degree, I worked as a cloud architect and passed all available AWS certificates. I completely fall in love with to cloud. I am grateful for my decision to pursue a postgraduate degree and find my two passions: writing and cloud.
Decision
Let’s sum up a few things. Some of my friends finished up their studies after their bachelor degrees. They had been sure they wanted to do some things, and they have been doing it for five years now. If you are sure you want to do something, just do it. My master degree showed me opportunities, but I did not know if I wanted to do it the rest of my life; therefore, I continued to a postgraduate degree where I found my passions. I hope this article helps you decide on a college and maybe you had the same road as I did.
This is my point of view on college degree titles but let’s see what the Human Resource guy(Dasa Noskovicova) thinks about it and how does it works in Adastra Slovakia.
My personal opinion is that the university is still important. However I fan the most students who during university try to enrich their theoretical experience in practice. We in Adastra always have had students who during their studies gain rich experience on real projects. And of course, there are still very clever people who became experts in their field without university degree.
